The Invading Armies of the Heart

In a silent setting
I'll speak my part:
I cannot protect myself
                           from you
or the invading armies of the heart
from the soldiers +
the marines
that you ordered to my door +
the battleships of love
that leave me wanting more
although their cannonballs +
missile blasts
are tearing me apart
I cannot protect myself
from the invading armies
of the heart

You're a torpedo
     underwater
you strike me from behind
I wish I'd paid attention
to your accidental signs
to your unintentional blips
on the radar in my skull
I'd have reinforced
the soft spot
in my tender human-hull
but it's too late
to make a start
I'll check the damage chart
for breaches caused by you +
the invading armies
of the heart

The swords that clash
the spears that fly +
tear my flesh to rags
I wish I could forget the day
your crescent sickle dragged
                                     me down
to bury me beneath the ground
in an unhallowed
unconsecrated
funeral mound
from where I composed
this hopeless song
after the fighting was done +
the war was won
by the upstart
                    but violent
squadron
whose cry is heard
in every part
the always-loveless legion
the invading armies of the heart
